"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have openly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos often depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international audience.

Yet Haim will always be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
